Oxford BioMedica (LSE: OXB) is a biopharmaceutical company specialising
in the development and commercialisation of innovative gene-based medicines. The Company was established in 1995 as a spin
out from Oxford University, and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Oxford BioMedica's products use genes as the mediators of a therapeutic
effect and/or immune response. The Company has a platform of gene delivery technologies, which are predominately based on
highly engineered viral systems. Oxford BioMedica has core expertise in gene delivery, as well as in-house clinical, regulatory
and manufacturing know-how.
The Company's
advanced development pipeline is comprised of
five gene-based product candidates. The lead product, TroVax®, is a therapeutic cancer vaccine for multiple solid cancers
that is being developed and commercialised in collaboration with sanofi-aventis. TroVax is currently in Phase III development
for renal cancer (see www.trovax.co.uk). Phase III trials of TroVax in colorectal cancer are expected to start in
H1 2009.
ProSavin® is a gene-based treatment for Parkinson's disease, which is potentially a one-off treatment to produce
a new source of dopamine in the striatum of the brain. Oxford BioMedica initiated a
Phase I/II trial of ProSavin in December 2007. Two other oncology products are
in Phase II development and a novel treatment for wet age-related macular
degeneration is expected to enter clinical development in 2009. Oxford
BioMedica's early-stage
development pipeline comprises multiple preclinical candidates targeting various unmet medical needs, including cancer, Stargardt's disease, motor neuron disease, spinal muscular atrophy and AIDS. The Company aims to take at least one of its novel gene-based candidates into clinical development each year.
The Company's commercial strategy is to develop products using its
proprietary technologies. For certain therapeutic markets, Oxford BioMedica will seek partners for late-stage development
and commercialisation. For selected products, the Company will look to co-develop and co-commercialise with partners, enabling
Oxford BioMedica to retain more value from the commercialisation of its products and move towards a fully integrated business
model with specialty sales and marketing capabilities. The Company also seeks collaborative opportunities arising from its
proprietary gene delivery technologies and related components.
Oxford BioMedica is underpinned by over 80 patent families, which
represent one of the broadest patent estates in the field. The Company has a staff of approximately 75 split between its
main facilities in Oxford and its wholly owned subsidiary, BioMedica Inc, in San Diego, California.
Oxford BioMedica is a member of the BioIndustry Association and
the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
